PERTH AMBOY -- This photo, taken in 1937, shows men employed on a Works Progress Administration project in Perth Amboy.
According to information available on livingnewdeal.org, they are working on the Perth Amboy Post Office, constructed with U.S. Treasury Department funds in that year. The building at 205 Jefferson St. is still in use today.
The Encyclopedia of U.S. Labor and Working-Class History notes that the WPA was the "largest and most ambitious American New Deal agency, employing millions of unemployed people (mostly unskilled men) to carry out public works projects including the construction of public buildings and roads."
