Two men pretending to be tree-trimmers remain at large after allegedly stealing the cash savings of a 90-year-old woman. Watch video
SOUTH BRUNSWICK TWP. -- An elderly woman has lost her entire cash savings after two men posing as tree-trimmers allegedly went to her home and stole $10,000 from her, according to a statement from the South Brunswick Police Department.
The two unidentified men remain at large, and police are asking for the community's help in finding them.
At about 1:30 p.m. last Thursday, the two men knocked on the 90-year-old woman's door of her home on Georges Road and said "they were from a construction company doing work in the area," according to the statement.
The men told the woman "she needed to have trees removed from her backyard at a cost of six hundred dollars."
The men had the woman walk into the backyard and said that "they would cut the trees down for five hundred dollars if she paid in cash."
After the woman gave the two men the cash, they distracted her and "took her entire cash savings, which was in the home."
"These suspects are some of the lowest kind of people we deal with," Chief Raymond Hayducka said in the statement. "They not only stole the victim's money but her sense of safety and security. She works her entire life only to be targeted by criminals when she reaches 90. We need the public's help to hunt these guys down."
Police said the suspects -- who were last seen walking away from the woman's house -- are described as two males with tan-colored skin, possibly Hispanic and spoke with accents.
The younger of the two was wearing a baseball cap, and the older man was wearing dark-colored clothing.
Authorities are seeking information from anyone who may have seen the two men on Georges Road last Thursday in the Dayton section of the township.
Detectives believe they may have knocked on other homes.
