NEW BRUNSWICK -- A New Brunswick police officer revived a man who was not breathing and had no sign of a pulse after being stabbed early Sunday morning, officials said in a statement.

When police responded to a reported stabbing in the 300 block of Handy Street, they found two victims "who were bleeding profusely" -- one of whom was stabbed in the chest and unresponsive.

New Brunswick police Officer Sean Freeman began CPR on the unresponsive man, Ellio Gonzalez, of New Brunswick, whose stabbing occurred during an altercation involving several people.

After performing CPR, Gonzalez regained "a pulse and (began) breathing until EMS personnel arrived" to bring both men to the hospital.

The second victim, Javier Roque, of New Brunswick, was stabbed in the right side of his torso.

According to police, at around 1 a.m. a "fight ensued between five and seven individuals" -- which resulted in the stabbings of Gonzalez and Roque.

The other individuals had fled before police arrived. Their descriptions are limited at this time, officials said.

Both victims underwent surgery at Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital and are expected to recover, police said in the statement.

Authorities are asking anyone with information on the incident to call Det. Brandt Gregus at 732-745-5217.
