Starting tomorrow morning (Saturday), westbound traffic will not be able cross Rt. 18 using Rt. 516 in Old Bridge.

OLD BRIDGE -- The closure and detour of the bridge carrying Route 516 west, also known as Matawan Road, over Route 18 in Old Bridge will begin Saturday morning (Feb. 27), the Department of Transportation has announced.

In a statement released Friday morning, the DOT said starting 8 a.m., work will begin on replacement of the bridge deck and will take the next six months, closing the westbound lane of Route 516 (Matawan Road).

The $2.6 million federal and state funded project will replace the bridge deck on the four-lane structure built in 1959 and perform limited work on the approaching roadways and the bridge, according to the statement.

Bridge traffic will remain open to passenger vehicles traveling eastbound on Route 516 during the work on the westbound side, but once the work is completed westbound, construction will shift to the eastbound side so the bridge will accommodate one lane of travel in each direction until the project is completed, the DOT said.

Motorists traveling westbound will have to exit onto Router 18 north and take the exit onto the Old Bridge Turnpike, make another right onto Main Street and make another right onto Route 18 south. From Route 18 south, motorists will exit onto Arthur Street and continue up Old Bridge Englishtown Road, also known as Route 516.
