EAST BRUNSWICK -- A Piscataway man is in the Middlesex County jail, facing drug and weapons charges after police found a handgun and marijuana on him when they stopped a car on Route 18 in East Brunswick.
Police said Herbert Donerson, 22, was a passenger in a car that Patrolman Christian Longhitano stopped at 1:30 a.m. Saturday on a motor vehicle violation on Route 18 north by the N.J. Turnpike entrance.
While he was talking to the driver, Longhitano smelled marijuana coming from the car and asked the driver to get out of the vehicle, police said. The driver was searched, but nothing was found, authorities said.
Police said the passenger, later identified as Donerson, was asked to leave the car and as the patrolman began to search him, Donerson "became uncooperative and agitated," according to a statement released by the police.
Police said Patrolman Matthew Egnasko, who came to backup Longhitano, helped arrest Donerson and when they searched him, they found a loaded 9mm handgun in his jacket pocket and a bag of marijuana in his front jeans pocket.
Donerson is charged with unlawful possession of a weapon and possession of under 50 grams of marijuana. He is in the county jail in lieu of $70,000 bail.
