SOUTH AMBOY -- Twenty three students at South Amboy Elementary School were taken to the Raritan Bay Medical Center in Perth Amboy after an unknown odor was detective in two classrooms, police said.

Police said a call was received at 11:32 a.m. from the school about the odor and, after an initial inspection, emergency personnel along with school administrators decided to evacuate the school and asked for the Middlesex County Office of Emergency management's HazMat unit to come to the scene.

Authorities said the school staff evaluated the students, who had been taken to an off site location, and decided that the 23 students who could have been exposed to the odor should be taken to the hospital to be checked out by a medical staff.

Police said the two classrooms are being isolated and monitored by the HazMat team to identify the odor and it's source.

Authorities said school is still scheduled to open Thursday morning unless the HazMat test turns up something that changes that decision.
