UPDATE: Victim in alleged attack 'in lots of pain'
NEW BRUNSWICK -- A 16-year-old student at New Brunswick High School has been charged with assault after attacking another student, apparently after an argument about a girl, police said in a statement on Monday.
This incident, which was captured on video and posted on social media, shows a violent confrontation in which a student is beaten in the hallway of the high school on Thursday.
Police said the 16-year-old attacked the younger student by "punching and kicking him multiple times." The victim suffered injuries to his nose, teeth, and upper torso.
A "preliminary police investigation suggests that the motive behind the assault stemmed from an argument over a female student," police said.
Police said that the 16-year-old student was "detained at the high school and was charged with assault (and) related offenses."
The victim's family told New Brunswick Today that they still had questions about the incident, including why an ambulance wasn't called.
The video can be viewed on New Brunswick Today's website. It contains strong language and violence.
Aubrey Johnson, superintendent for New Brunswick Public Schools, said in a statement on Monday at the school district could not "comment on matters involving individual students."
he said the school in response to the altercation followed protocols.
"New Brunswick Public Schools will not tolerate violence in any form; even one punch is a punch too many," he said. "Parents can feel confident that any act of violence will be met with appropriate punishment and victims of crimes will be provided with the support they need."
Police ask that anyone with additional information to call Det. Jamaal James at (732) 745-5222.
