Update: In opening statement, defense attorney says no evidence found in 25 years to link Lodzinski to her son's murder.
NEW BRUNSWICK - A filthy, old blanket was shown for the first time publicly Wednesday morning during the prosecutor's opening arguments in the murder trial against a former South Amboy woman accused of killing her 5-year-old son nearly 25 years ago.
Middlesex County Assistant Prosecutor Christie Bevacqua put on blue plastic gloves as he stood in front of the jury in Superior Court in New Brunswick, then he held up the faded blue and white blanket found about 30 feet from Timothy's remains.
The blanket is part of the new evidence that led to Lodzinski's indictment in the death of her son, according to the prosecutor's office.
"She dumped his body in a creek like a piece of trash but she left behind a telling clue, this blanket," Bevacqua said.
"No other killer could get this," she continued, arguing that if someone else killed Timothy, they would not have had access to the blanket.
The blanket, found in a marshy area of Raritan Center in Edison, was shown to Lodzinski and her mother after it was found in 1992, prosecutors have said. Both women said they didn't recognize it, but another relative who had babysit for the child said she recognized the blanket, prosecutors said.
Lodzinski has told police that her son went missing at a carnival in a Sayreville park the night of May 25, 1991.
She has remained jailed on $2 million bail since she was charged with the child's murder in August 2014. The boy's skull and some other bones were found 11 months later.
