Local girl medals at fencing championships

Sofia Komar of Old Bridge took home a first-place win in the Cadet Women Epee group of the 2016 Cadet/Junior Pan American Fencing Championships, held Feb. 29 to March 5 in Cancun, Mexico.

OLD BRIDGE -- Sofia Komar of Old Bridge took home a first-place win in the Cadet Women Epee group of the 2016 Cadet/Junior Pan American Fencing Championships, held Feb. 29 to March 5 in Cancun, Mexico.

The annual event brings four of the best fencers from each country in North and South America. Komar, 15, fenced for the United States in four events: Individual Cadet (younger than 17), Individual Junior (younger than 20), Mixed Team Cadets and Junior Women Epee Team.

The U.S. team won the Mixed Cadet event and came second in the Junior Women Epee team event. Komar also won bronze in the Individual Junior group.

Komar trains at Medeo Fencing in Bridgewater and her primary coach is Yakov Danilenko.
