EDISON -- Authorities have identified the driver killed Tuesday in a three-car crash on Route 27.

Marcus Scroggins, 33, of Edison, was pronounced dead at the scene following the crash, which occurred near the intersection of Division Street shortly before 2 p.m., Middlesex County Prosecutor Andrew C. Carey and Edison police Chief Thomas Bryan announced in a statement sent to news outlets.

Scroggins was driving a 1997 Pontiac Grand Am when a U-Haul rental truck struck him head-on, the statement said.

An investigation conducted by Edison police Detective Loren Long and Detective Donald Heck of the Middlesex County Prosecutor's Office found that the driver of the U-Haul, whom authorities did not identify, was heading north on Route 27 when it crossed into oncoming traffic.

The truck sideswiped a 1999 Ford Explorer and then continued on the wrong side of Route 27, striking the Pontiac, authorities said. The driver of the Explorer was injured but declined medical treatment, according to authorities.

After the collision, the box truck pushed the Pontiac about 100 feet before they came to a rest at the intersection of Route 27 and Division Street.

Authorities did not say what caused the U-Haul to cross into incoming traffic.

No charges have been filed yet, Carey said, but the investigation is "active and is continuing."

He asked anyone with information to call Detective Long at 732-248-7400, or Detective Heck at 732-745-3300.
