A cache of weapons was allegedly found in the car of a man who had been impersonating a DEA agent.
MILLTOWN -- Police say they found a cache of weapons -- including knives, machetes, crossbows, police batons, and other items -- on Tuesday in the vehicle of an Edison man who allegedly had been posing as a federal agent.
Robert Toth, 46, allegedly called the Milltown Police Department Tuesday claiming to be a DEA agent and made "threatening statements about a police officer" concerning a summons that had been issued, police said in a statement.
Later that day, authorities say Toth encountered a police officer in uniform who was conducting a motor vehicle stop on Washington Avenue. Toth identified himself to the officer as a federal DEA agent K-9 handler. After speaking to the officer, Toth drove off in his Chevy SUV, the statement said.
Authorities, who had begun an investigation after the initial phone call, ultimately discovered Toth sitting in his vehicle in a borough parking lot.
He was arrested wearing a police logo K-9 shirt, handcuff keys, and a police-style badge, police said.
When authorities searched his vehicle, they said they found "23 knives/machetes, two crossbows equipped with metal-tipped arrows, two expandable police batons, one empty pistol holster, and one empty ammunition magazine pouch."
Police said they also found a 9 mm pistol at his Edison residence.
He was charged with impersonating a police officer, unlawful possession of handcuffs, unlawful possession of weapons, harassment, obstruction of justice, and consumption of alcohol within a motor vehicle.
He was taken to the Middlesex County Adult Correctional Center after failing to post $10,000 bail, officials said.
The incident remains under investigation and police say additional charges are likely.
