NEW BRUNSWICK -- An inmate from the Middlesex County jail who was receiving treatment at a local hospital Tuesday night when he walked away while awaiting transport back to the jail has been charged with escape, according to Sheriff Mildred Scott.

Sherman Martin, 23, of Plainfield, had been in Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital for medical reasons for more than a week when a judge changed his bail status to "conditional ROR," Scott said.

"It stands for release on your own recognizance," she said. "It's an honor program. He signs a paper that says he cannot leave the hospital. The hospital knows when he is ready to be released, the hospital is to contact the sheriff's office and we will take him back to the jail."

Scott said Martin knew that because the paper he signed explained that to him and told him "that he was to wait until the sheriff's officers picked him up or he would be charged with escape. He didn't wait."

She said Martin was in the jail on charges of shoplifting and failure to appear.

Scott said as of Wednesday afternoon, Martin had not been found and returned to the county jail.
