EDISON - Firefighters battled a brush fire this afternoon in an area between Raritan Center and the Raritan River, with smoke visible for miles but little concern over danger, officials said.

Firefighters from Edison and Sayreville and units from the NJ State Forest Fire Service were on hand to contain the fire, which was burning alongside a parked freight train in a marshy area. The train was carrying plastic pellets, said Chief Brian Latham of the Edison Fire Department.

Latham said crews would begin back burning any areas that had not already burned to keep the fire it from spreading toward any buildings. He remarked the wind was blowing toward the Raritan River, further allaying any concerns about the blaze.
