NEW BRUNSWICK -- An Edison man was charged on Wednesday with selling heroin that allegedly caused a man's death, officials said in a statement from the Middlesex County Prosecutor's Office.

Emile "Oatmeal" Constable Jr., 25, was charged with one count of strict liability for selling drugs to 23-year-old Aniq Ali, who, according to a toxicology report, died after ingesting the heroin allegedly sold by Constable, according to the statement.

Constable was charged after the toxicology report allegedly showed Ali had died on Feb. 24 from the heroin, the statement said.

Constable's bail has been set at $100,000, officials said.

Constable was initially arrested the day after Ali's death, and was charged with distributing a controlled dangerous substance to the victim.

He also had been charged with possession with intent to distribute in an unrelated matter, and charged with one count of possession and one count of possession with intent to distribute, according to the statement.

The new charge came as a result of an investigation by detectives in the Edison Police Department and Middlesex County Prosecutor's Office who found that Constable allegedly sold 10 bags of heroin to Ali with each bag containing about one gram of heroin, the statement said.

Fighting the current heroin epidemic that has increased in recent years takes not only education and treatment, Middlesex County Prosecutor Andrew Carey said in the statement, but also aggressive prosecution of "those responsible in the deaths of so many addicts."

The investigation remains ongoing.
