A police officer was injured after being struck by a vehicle while sitting in his cruiser.

SOUTH BRUNSWICK -- A police officer sitting in his patrol car writing a traffic summons was struck by a vehicle on Monday on Route 130 near Route 522, according to a spokesman at the South Brunswick Police Department.

The incident happened at around 1:45 p.m. on the southbound side of Route 130, police said.

The officer had stopped a tractor-trailer for speeding on the right shoulder near the Toyota dealership, police said.

A white car then struck both the officer's vehicle and the tractor-trailer from behind, authorities said.

The officer and the driver of the white car were both taken to Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital with nonlife-threatening injuries, officials said.

The police cruiser and the white car appear to have been totaled from the crash, officials said.

Police said more information on the injuries would be forthcoming.

An earlier version of this article incorrectly stated that the driver of the tractor-trailer was taken to the hospital. The driver of the white vehicle was the other person injured in the crash and taken to the hospital.
