SAYREVILLE -- A woman has been arrested and charged with leaving the scene after allegedly striking two young boys with her vehicle Monday morning, officials said in a statement.

Margaret Cheheli, 36, of Sayreville, was reportedly driving a 2015 Dodge Dart when, at about 7:45 a.m., she allegedly struck two brothers, ages 5 and 8, while they were in a crosswalk at Our Lady of Victories School on Main Street, according to a statement from the Middlesex County Prosecutor's Office.

Cheheli then allegedly "fled and abandoned her car," the statement said.

Shortly after the incident, officials said she was apprehended by authorities who saw her walking on Main Street.

The boys were taken to Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital in New Brunswick. The 5-year-old boy is still in the hospital. His brother was treated and released, according to officials.

She has been charged with two counts of aggravated assault and one count each of leaving the scene of a motor vehicle crash involving serious injury. She has also been charged with endangering an injured victim by fleeing, and tampering with evidence by tossing her keys after stopping her car, the statement said.

She remains in custody with bail set at $100,000, according to officials.

The investigation remains ongoing.
