Perth Amboy Mayor Wilda Diaz launched her bid for a third term and announced her two city council running mates this week.

PERTH AMBOY -- Mayor Wilda Diaz launched her campaign for a third term as mayor Wednesday evening and announced her city council running mates.

Diaz will be running, as she did four years ago, with Fernando Irizarry. She's also running with newcomer Jelmin Caba, a community leader, who serves on the Perth Amboy Municipal Alliance, the city's historical preservation commission and the Kearny Cottage Historical Society.

"I gave very careful thought to selecting a team that can build on my accomplishments of the last eight years in both redeveloping our great city and handling challenges like those presented by SuperStorm Sandy," Diaz said.

She called Irizarry "a proven leader, an educator and a pastor in the community," and Caba, "a community activist, educator and entrepreneur who will bring fresh ideas to city government."

"Together, they are the right team for the people of Perth Amboy," Diaz said.

Irizarry, who is running for a second four-year term on the council, is a science teacher in the Woodbridge public schools and ordained minister. He is associate pastor at the Perth Amboy Christian Center.

Diaz was first elected mayor in 2008.
