Motorists need to detour beginning tonight for 10 weeks when a ramp from Rt. 440 to Pfeiffer Avenue in Perth Amboy is closed.
PERTH AMBOY -- The state Department of Transportation announced Friday that the ramp from Route 440 to Pfeiffer Boulevard (Route 184) will close Friday night for 10 weeks.
The ramp will close at 11:30 p.m. to permit replacement and reconstruction of the bridge deck that carries Route 440 over Route 35, according to a press release from the state transportation department.
The press release said the closure will require two detours--one for traffic heading to Route 440 southbound from Lawrence Street and Amboy Avenue and for traffic coming from the Outerbridge Crossing.
For traffic heading to Route 440 southbound from Lawrence Street and Amboy Avenue, motorists will be directed to stay on Waltrous Avenue which crosses Amboy Avenue, then across Route 35 and back onto Pfeiffer Boulevard.
For motorists coming from the Outerbridge Crossing, traffic will continue on Route 440 southbound beyond the closed exit ramp and take the New Brunswick Avenue/ Woodbridge exit ramp which merges traffic onto Court Avenue to a T-intersection with New Brunswick Avenue. Motorists will then make a right onto New Brunswick Avenue, continue about .4 miles and make a right turn onto a local access road and onto northbound Rt. 9 so they can get back onto Pfeiffer Boulevard (Route 184).
The press release said the precise timing of work is subject change due to weather or other factors and encourages motorists to check the DOT's traffic information website www.511nj.org or follow the DOT on Twitter @NJDOT info.
