An Edison police sergeant who is an Air Force veteran and member of the reserves will serve as parade grand marshal.

EDISON -- The 54th annual Memorial Day Parade will kick off at noon featuring 60 participating groups and organizations, according to Mayor Thomas Lankey.

Lankey said the parade will start in the Stelton section of Edison at Division Street near the main library and travel up Plainfield Avenue to Jefferson Boulevard, where refreshments will be provided at the American Legion Father & Son Post 435 on Oakland Avenue.

"Our parade promises to be a fun family event," Lankey said. "More importantly, it is a way for Edison to come together as a community as we remember those who made the ultimate sacrifice in service to our nation, protecting the freedom we enjoy."

The grand marshal for this year's parade is Air Force Master Sgt. David Tingle, who is also a 13-year Edison police veteran, and was among 10 police officers promoted to sergeant last week, Lankey said.

Tingle, 37, served in the U.S. Air Force from July 1996 to April 2001, then joined the Air Force Reserves and continues to serve. He currently serves as security forces administrative superintendent and manager for the Raven Program, 514th Security Forces Squadron, Joint Base McGuire Dix in Lakehurst.

During his deployments, he served at American airfields in Bahrain, Oman, Afghanistan and Kuwait.
