The death of a 65-year-old pedestrian on Rt. 1 Thursday was the third fatal accident in South Brunswick in 2016, police said.

SOUTH BRUNSWICK -- A 65-year-old Middlesex County woman was killed Thursday night when she was struck by a car while walking across the northbound lanes of Route 1 at Deans lane.

Middlesex County Prosecutor Andrew Carey and South Brunswick Police Chief Raymond Hayducka said the woman, whose identity was not released, was crossing the highway at 9:56 p.m. when she was struck by a 2016 Subaru Impreza driven by a 30-year-old Piscataway man.

They said the woman was pronounced dead at the scene.

Carey and Hayducka said the Piscataway man stopped at the scene.

They said no charges have been filed.

The northbound lanes of Route 1 were closed from 10 p.m. to 3 a.m. due to the investigation.

Hayducka said this is the third fatal crash in the township in 2016.

They said investigators have spoken to some witnesses but are asking anyone who may have information to please contact South Brunswick police Traffic Safety Officer Jesse Blake at (732) 329-4000 ext. 7472.
