NEW BRUNSWICK -- Middlesex County high school juniors and seniors in the Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital Safety Ambassador Program were recognized for helping young students stay safe this school year at the hospital's eighth annual Safety Ambassador Program Recognition Luncheon.

The Safety Ambassadors began their work last October when they attended a "Safety Summit." At the summit, RWJUH's Injury Prevention team members briefed them on the safety topics they needed to cover with their young peers -- fall prevention, pedestrian safety, wheeled sports/helmet safety and safety in and around cars. The Safety Ambassadors then prepared safety lessons, which they presented at participating elementary schools in their districts from February to May.

When the Safety Ambassador Program was launched, five high schools and five elementary schools participated. There are now 22 high schools and 27 elementary schools participating in the program that is intended to reduce injuries among young students.

The awards luncheon was held June 1 in the Arline and Henry Schwartzman Courtyard at RWJUH.
