There has been another sighting of a bear in Middlesex County, officials said in a statement Thursday afternoon.

At around 4:30 p.m., officials reported that a black bear had been spotted near the border of Piscataway and Middlesex Borough.

This has been the second sighting of a bear in the county in a little more than a week.

On June 14, a medium-sized bear was spotted in the Iselin-section of the Woodbridge Township near a middle school.

It is unclear if the sighting on Thursday was the same bear.

Officials said in the statement that black bears "tend to be wary of humans and avoid people."

However, if encountered by a black bear, officials provided some common sense safety measures:

  • Never feed or approach the bear
  • Don't look the bear in the eyes
  • Stay calm and never run
  • Make your presence known; speak assertively -- clap your hands or make other types of noises. To scare the bear away, officials suggested banging pots and pans or using an air horn.
  • Make yourself "look as big as possible by waving your arms."
  • Make sure the bear has an escape route.

Officials said any other bear sightings in the area should be immediately reported to the Middlesex Police Department at 732-356-1900.
