Cho blamed a hoagie, in part, for her New Brunswick show going awry
After her comedy show didn't go to plan at Stress Factory in New Brunswick this past March -- some of the audience walked out -- Margaret Cho got a chance for a do-over.
Though only people who had tickets to the original show were invited to attend the re-do, the story behind the effort is now open to a much wider audience, thanks to Jerry Seinfeld.
Seinfeld travels to New Jersey with Cho as part of a new episode of his Crackle series "Comedians in Cars Getting Coffee" (trailer above). The title: "You Can Go Cho Again."
Both Cho and Seinfeld bring their stand-up to New Brunswick for the do-over. Before that, though, they spend some time driving around Los Angeles in a vintage car and drinking coffee, reminiscing about how they met in 1988, when Seinfeld offered the young comedian some much-needed encouragement. Along the way, they talk hockey, ice skating, acorn jelly -- the usual.
"This show is the first time anything like this has happened in this industry and I am proud to stand up for this club and give us another chance together," Cho wrote in the April invitation -- a far cry from her assertion that an audience member would "never get a cent of the money back" that they paid, which is what she originally said when sparring with the Jersey crowd.
"I did a show in New Jersey and the audience was so furious at me," Cho tells Seinfeld. "And one woman stood up and screamed, 'You can't talk about rape on Easter!'"
She and Seinfeld have an intimate chat with the audience and talk about what went wrong, brokering an understanding with the small crowd.
Part of the issue, Cho says -- besides the fatigue-inducing hoagie that she ate before the show ("They're called subs!" one woman protests) -- is that she covers difficult subjects, like sexual assault (she is a survivor of rape) in her material.
