Officials say an apartment in which dozens of cats were found including several years cats has caused a health hazard.
WOODBRIDGE -- Officials on Tuesday found dozens of cats, several that were dead, in an Iselin apartment that was covered in urine and feces, which officials also say has created a health hazard.
The Woodbridge Animal Control and several other agencies responded to the Harrowsgate Apartment complex on Gill Lane on Tuesday where officials found the "large number of cats" in an apartment, township spokesman John Hagerty said in an email.
At least two cats were taken to a veterinary facility for treatment, Hagerty said.
The Woodbridge Department of Health was at the scene as of around 10 a.m. on Wednesday, he noted.
"The property has become a health/safety/welfare issue due to the large amount and heavy smell of using, feces and dead animals thought the apartment," Hagerty said in the email."
He said Woodbridge Health Department inspectors reported "inhumane conditions due to the accumulation of debris, urine and animal feces."
The Woodbridge Township Animal Control, the Woodbridge Township Health Department, the New Jersey SPCA, the Middlesex County HAZMAT and the Woodbridge Police Department all responded to the scene.
The investigation remains ongoing.
In Monmouth County, 36 cats were removed from a property in Colts Neck on Monday after officials responded to a complaint of animal cruelty on Wednesday, according to a report by NJ Advance Media.
And a Woodbridge pet shop owner who was charged in December with animal cruelty pleaded guilty on Monday to animal health care violations, previous reports said.
