PERTH AMBOY -- The state Department of Transportation announced Wednesday trucks will not be allowed in the right lane of Route 35 north over the Perth Amboy connector/Route 624 for emergency bridge repairs.

The statement from the DOT said a scheduled inspection of the bridge, which is about half a mile north of the Route 35 Victory Bridge over the Raritan River, uncovered deterioration in a beam requiring the right northbound lane of the bridge to be closed to trucks Wednesday afternoon. Trucks may continue to use the left lane on Route 35 northbound.

The DOT said the restriction does not affect the southbound lanes or cars.

Engineers are designing a short term repair, the statement said.

The bridge carries two lanes of traffic in each direction with no shoulders and includes a sidewalk on both sides. A project to replace the bridge is in final design and is scheduled to go out to bid in the spring of 2017, the statement said. The replacement project is expected to take about two years and will widen the bridge to include shoulders.
