Once contaminated site in Perth Amboy on its way to revival

The City is on its way to reviving a once contaminated construction site and turning it into a new facility to boost economic opportunities for the city.

PERTH AMBOY -- An industrial site once blighted by contamination is on its way to seeing new life, as demolition began last month to clear the way for a new industrial complex to help boost economic opportunities in the city.

Last month, demolition began at the former ASARCO site on State Street where an ongoing project seeks to construct a new industrial complex of 13 structures spanning more than 250,000 square feet, according to a statement from the township.

The plan "proposes to transform the industrial area of Perth Amboy's historic waterfront from a contaminated Bownfield site into a new state-of-the-art complex," according the statement.

"Perth Amboy's geographically bounded by the Raritan River, Arthur Kill, and Raritan Bay provides port access to the Atlantic Ocean for national and international marine traffic, most notably the Port of New York and New Jersey," said Mayor Wilda Diaz. "Because of the location, this renewed property investment with Bridge and Commercial development will boost our local economy and develop business opportunities in the area within the next 18 to 24 months."

Commercial Development Company Inc. (CDC) and Bridge Development Partners LLC, have partnered to construct two industrial additional buildings totaling 1 million square feet. Construction on that project will begin in 2017.
