Old Bridge will honor its own Olympian gymnast Laurie Hernandez, who won a spot on the U.S. Olympic team, Thursday.

OLD BRIDGE -- The township will honor its homegrown Olympian, Laurie Hernandez Thursday, at the high school, according to Mayor Owen Henry.

Henry said Tuesday the township has arranged for Hernandez, who won a spot on the U.S. Olympics gymnastic team Sunday night, to be at the high school on Route 516 from 6 p.m. to 7 p.m. so that residents can show her their support and "we can send her off to bring home the gold."

He said the event can only last for an hour because "her trainer is adamant about her following a very strict schedule."

The event will be held in the school's auditorium.

The 16-year-old is one of five members of the country's gymnastics squad that will compete next month in Rio de Janeiro and Henry said she is "the talk of the town."
