A Pennsylvania man was arrested on charged on Tuesday in connection to the fatal crash in Edison in April.
EDISON -- A Pennsylvania man on Tuesday was arrested and charged in connection with killing an Edison driver in April while under the influence of narcotics, according to a statement from Middlesex County Prosecutor Andrew C. Carey and Edison police Chief Thomas Bryan.
John T. O'Donnell Sr., 57, of Nazareth, Pa., was charged with death by auto for allegedly causing the death of Marcus Scroggins, 33, of Edison, on April 5, the statement said.
O'Donnell, the Prosecutor's Office said, surrendered to authorities after an investigation found that he allegedly was "driving a U-Haul rental box truck and was heading north on Route 27 in Edison when he crossed into on-coming traffic" at around 1:45 p.m. on April 5.
The box truck had initially side-swiped a 1999 Ford Explorer, injuring the driver, and continuing on the wrong side of the road, and crashing head-on into Scroggins's 1999 Pontiac Grand Am and pushing it "about 100 feet before stopping at the Division Street intersection," according to the Prosecutor's Office.
When emergency personnel arrived at the scene, they noted that O'Donnell was "under the influence of narcotics." Emergency personnel treated him with the opiate antidote known as Narcan, the statement said.
The investigation was led by Det. Loren Long, of the Edison Police Department, and Det. Donald Heck, of the Middlesex County Prosecutor's Office.
The investigation remains ongoing. Anyone with information can contact Long at 732-248-7400 or can contact Heck at 732-745-3300.
