Only 1 person was in the residence hall at the time
NEW BRUNSWICK -- No one was hurt when a small electrical fire broke out in the basement of a Rutgers University dormitory late Sunday.
A resident assistant in Demarest Hall called 911 shortly before midnight after smelling smoke, university spokesman E.J. Miranda said.
Firefighters quickly brought the blaze under control and left the residence hall on the College Avenue campus by 1 a.m. The fire, which broke out in a one-horsepower motor associated with an electrical substation, was mostly smoke.
There was little to no damage to the basement. The resident assistant was the only person in the building, according to Miranda.
