Verizon workers struck a gas line in South Brunswick on Tuesday causing buildings in the area to be evacuated.
SOUTH BRUNSWICK TWP. -- Businesses were evacuated on Tuesday after Verizon workers struck and broke a gas line while conducting repairs in the area, police said.
The gas line break occurred around 10:15 a.m. near Deerpark Drive, which is off Route 1 South. No one was injured, police said.
The evacuations were a precautionary measure, authorities said.
As of about 10:45 a.m., Verizon was attempting to acquire multiple buses to transport those evacuated, authorities said. However, plans were not yet finalized, and police said it was not yet determined where the people would be taken.
Officials did not know what type of repairs the Verizon workers were conducting.
Police in a statement said motorists should avoid Route 1 between Ridge Road and Raymond Road. That area will be closed in both directions until further notice. Those traveling in that area should use either Route 27 or Route 130 to go north or south at this time.
Authorities did not have a timeframe when work would be completed.
Employees from Princeton Corporate Plaza, a business located off Deerpark Drive and Route 1, were reportedly told to evacuate and stand near a wooded area far from the gas leak, according to the building's management.
