The Middlesex County Passport Office will close Aug. 18 so passport agents can receive mandated federal training.

NEW BRUNSWICK -- The Middlesex County Passport Office will close Aug. 18 so all passport acceptance agents can attend a federally mandated passport recertification training.

Middlesex County Clerk Elaine Flynn said the training will be done under the direction of the U.S. Department of State.

Employees will be instructed on new passport regulations and on their individual obligations as acceptance agents. She said employees need to pass a test at the end of the training.

"New regulations required by the federal government have increased the need for individuals to have passports, even those who may not use them strictly for travel," Flynn said. "The training will ensure that this office can continue to provide the most efficient and up-to-date service for our residents."

The clerk's registry office will remain open on Aug. 18 for notary certifications, which are usually done by the passport office.
