RIO DE JANEIRO -- Laurie Hernandez has already had an eventful trip to the Olympics and the Old Bridge native has yet to step on the floor for a single competition.

For starters, she is rooming in the athlete's village with Simone Biles, whose upcoming Olympic debut is one of the most anticipated moments for Team USA. Biles and Hernandez have been active on social media, showing off their many trips around the village and encounters with other athletes.

It looks like they've had a blast ...

But on Wednesday, Hernandez made news for another reason. She announced on Instagram that she would turn pro after the Games, passing up on a full ride to the University of Florida.

"I am excited about what it means to compete at the highest level of this sport and really want to focus on elite gymnastics for the next four years," said Hernandez in the USA Gymnastics release.  "This was not an easy decision to make, but by making the decision now, it allows me to focus entirely on gymnastics and how I can enjoy this sport that I love."

This decision won't stop the smiling 16-year-old, who doesn't graduate high school until 2018, from potentially competing in the 2020 Olympics in Tokyo. It does allow her to focus on gymnastics at the highest level, earn money from potential endorsements and not have to worry about the litany of NCAA regulations.

Hernandez, who will meet with the media Thursday night in Rio, has a chance to be the breakout star of these Games. If that happens, turning pro will allow her to cash in on the inevitable endorsements that follow.
