MIDDLESEX -- Six vehicles were destroyed in a fire at a borough automobile scrap yard on Sunday that went to two alarms before being extinguished, authorities said.

Firefighters from the borough and five nearby towns battled the blaze that was first reported at 12:45 p.m. at the Absolute Auto Salvage business, 245 Mountain Ave., police Lt. Frank DeNick said.

"A passerby reported seeing a plume," DeNick said.

He said firefighters from the borough quickly arrived at the scene, but the fire spread through the vehicles and an outbuilding on the lot.

As the fire went to two alarms, firefighters from Bound Brook, Dunellen, Franklin Township, Green Brook and Piscataway assisted at the scene, DeNick said.

He said the fire was extinguished at 1:47 p.m. and no injuries were reported. Nobody was working at the scrap yard on Sunday, the lieutenant said.

He said the cause of the fire is under investigation, but it is not thought to be suspicious.
