A New Brunswick spokeswoman said the city has cleared out the lines and replaced manhole covers to keep water out of pipes.

NEW BRUNSWICK -- Residents told city council members earlier this month that when it rains heavily, sewage backs up into their basements in a part of the city, according to a report.

The report on mycentraljersey.com said the mix of water and fecal matter pours into basements of homes at the intersection of Talmadge Street and Lee Avenue.

Nilsa Rodriguez, a resident of the area, told the council at its Aug. 3 meeting that it has happened every time there is constant rainfall.

Jennifer Bradshaw, a spokeswoman for the city, said in the report that since the council meeting when the residents brought up the problem, the city's engineering department had jetted out the manholes located in all four directions at the intersection and removed significant debris.

Bradshaw said the city also replaced all of the manhole covers because the old ones were letting in too much rainwater.

Scattered storms are forecast for Thursday which could bring up .75 inches of rain, according to the National Weather Service's Mt. Holly office.
