Lewis C. Hooper must serve at least 85 percent of the lengthy sentence
NEW BRUNSWICK-- A Highland Park man may be in prison until he's in his 90s for shooting another man in the head three years ago, Middlesex County Prosecutor Andrew C. Carey said Thursday.
Lewis C. Hooper, 32, was sentenced Thursday to 64 years after pleading guilty in June to attempted murder, robbery, weapons offenses and hindering apprehension of himself and two co-defendants. Hooper, who is considered a persistent offender, must serve at least 85 percent of the sentence before earning parole eligibility.
On Jan. 15, 2013, Hooper shot his now 25-year-old victim and fled the scene with two others. Police caught Hooper during a foot chase on Somerset Street.
The injured man was left severely disabled as a result of the shooting, authorities said.
One of Hooper's co-defendants, Chinnika Lockhart, 29, of Franklin Township, is serving a nine-year sentence. Mohamed Kamara, 30, also of Franklin, is awaiting trial.
