1 charged in I-287 hit-and-run that killed missing man

A New Brunswick woman has been charged with leaving the scene of a motor-vehicle accident that seriously injured a township man who had been reported missing.

FRANKLIN -- A New Brunswick woman has been charged with leaving the scene of a motor-vehicle accident on southbound Interstate 287 on Tuesday night that killed a township man who had been reported missing, State Police spokesman Trooper Alejandro Goez confirmed Monday.

Angelica I. Santiago, 26, of New Brunswick, allegedly struck Shaborn Smith, 26, of the Somerset section of the township, with her vehicle and fled the scene, according to a complaint filed in Somerset County Superior Court.

Santiago, who was driving a 2008 Honda Accord, was also charged with hindering apprehension and providing false information to authorities regarding the accident, according to the complaint.

Those charges will likely be upgraded pending the outcome of an investigation, said Goez.

At 10:45 p.m., State Police received a report of an accident on Interstate 287 southbound at mile marker 12.5, near exit 12, said Goez. He said he couldn't provide more details until he receives the official report.

It's unclear how police apprehended Santiago or how and when Smith was found, said Goez.

Memorial message's were left on the State Police Facebook regarding the search for Smith.

On Wednesday morning, State Police announced that they searching for Smith, who was last seen walking on Interstate 287 southbound near exit 12 around 11 p.m.

"It has been reported that he may suffer from a mental illness and he may have sustained a physical injury before he went missing," authorities said.
