EDISON -- Money Magazine has named the Edison one the top four places to live in New Jersey, and gave the town its highest ranking yet as one of top 50 places to reside in the country.

"Money recognizes what most people here already know: Edison is a wonderful place to live, to raise a family and work," Mayor Thomas Lankey said in a statement. "We have tremendous pride in our community. In Town Hall, we consistently strive to make Edison even better."

Parsippany ranked number 5 on the national Money magazine list, while Edison came in at 19. Two other New Jersey towns made the top 50 with Frankin (Somerset County) at 23 and Cherry Hill at 26.

Edison, which has a population of more than 100,000 with 34,200 households, was noted for its diversity. Edison has a 42.5-percent Asian population with large Indian, Pakistani, Chinese, Korean and Filipino communities.

"The town is home to a large Indian population, many of whom have set up shop on Oak Tree Road, a hub featuring Indian restaurants, jewelry stores, and other businesses," the Money magazine report said.

"One of Edison's most distinguish features is it's ethnic, cultural and religious diversity, a diversity we embrace and enjoy," Lankey said in the statement. "The professional offices, specialty stores, restaurants and other businesses owned and operated by this diverse group of people have strengthened our local economy."

The report described Edison as "relatively affordable."

The median price of a home is $315,000; the income for average residents is $105,000; and it has an unemployment rate of 4.5-percent, according to the township.

The report also cited the township's major employers like John F. Kennedy Medical Center and Johnson & Johnson.

And, a strong educational system was also listed, citing a nearly 80 percent of students attend its public schools system, along with "a stone's throw of the resources" by having Rutgers University and Middlesex Community College nearby.
