Students build unique doghouses to help raise money for Canine Companions for Independence.
EAST BRUNSWICK -- If the tiny house built by Middlesex County Vocational and Technical School senior Ashly Rhaman and junior Dylan Stratton looks familiar, it should: Dubbed "The Doggenheim," the MCVTS students' creation is a doghouse modeled after the Guggenheim Museum in New York City.
"It's for a small dog, six to 10 pounds, like a small terrier," said Stratton of their design.
Rhaman, a resident of New Brunswick, and Stratton, of East Brunswick, built the doghouse in the trades/carpentry shop on the East Brunswick campus using recycled wood from pallets which they steamed and bent around a PVC form.
"It took a month to build," said Rahman. "The hardest part was bending the wood. We had to bend it fast."
The Doggenheim and the other fancy dog digs built by MCVTS students at the East Brunswick and Piscataway campuses will the auctioned Oct. 22 at DogFest, a benefit for Canine Companions for Independence, which trains dogs to assist people with physical disabilities.
"It's a useful activity for our students to do and it's supporting a good organization," said Sean McDonald, MCVTS director of career and technical education.
DogFest will take place from 9:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Roosevelt Park in Edison.
