A woman riding without a seat belt was seriously injured when the car in which she was riding collided with a police cruiser.

EDISON -- A driver who apparently made an illegal left turn across Route 1 collided with a police cruiser late Saturday in a crash that injured both the driver's wife and the officer in the cruiser, authorities said.

Officer Michael Gallant was traveling south on Route 1 shortly after 11 p.m. Saturday, when a man from Park Ridge was traveling north and turned left toward Prince Street, police Chief Thomas Bryan said.

The driver of the car, whose name was not immediately available Sunday, collided with Gallant's cruiser, Bryan said.

He said the driver's daughter was in the front seat of the car, and the mother was in the back seat and was not wearing a seat belt.

The woman was taken to Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital in New Brunswick for treatment of a serious head injury, the chief said. He said Gallant was taken to the same hospital for treatment of head, neck and knee injuries.

Details about the driver and his daughter were not immediately available.

Middlesex County investigators were at the scene and the accident remains under investigation, authorities said.
