NEW BRUNSWICK -- Last month, more than 200 Middlesex County high school juniors and seniors gathered at Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital to take part in the hospital's Safety Ambassador Program.

Each year, RWJUH Safety Ambassadors meet for a training session to learn injury prevention tips, which they then share with first- and second-graders in their districts during the school year.

According to Carol Lavitt, SAP coordinator, one of the reasons the program is effective is because small children tend to listen when teenagers talk. "While Mom or Dad may tell the little ones to wear a helmet, they will actually listen and hear the message differently when it is coming from a 'cool teenager,'" Lavitt said.

Attending the program were students from Colonia, Dunellen, Edison, East Brunswick Vo-Tech, Highland Park, JP Stevens, Monroe, Metuchen, Middlesex Academy Edison, Middlesex Academy Woodbridge, New Brunswick, North Brunswick, Old Bridge, Piscataway, Piscataway Vo-Tech, St. Joe's, South Amboy, South Brunswick, South River, Wardlaw-Hartridge and Woodbridge high schools.
