Joseph Petrillo, 20, was charged with vehicular homicide, authorities announced on Monday.

EDISON -- A township man was charged Monday with causing a fatal motor-vehicle crash that killed a 93-year-old man.

Joseph Petrillo, 20, was charged with vehicular homicide in connection with the death of Edison resident Luis Figueroa, Middlesex County Prosecutor Andrew Carey and Edison police Chief Thomas Bryan announced in a joint statement.

Authorities say a joint investigation between the two agencies showed that on July 25 Petrillo was driving his 2007 Dodge Ram pickup truck at a "high rate of speed" northbound on Route 27 near the intersection of Peterson Avenue when he struck Figueroa's 1995 BMW sedan.

Figueroa was attempting to make a left turn from the southbound side of Route 27 when he was struck by Petrillo's truck, authorities said.

Figueroa was taken to Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital in New Brunswick where he was pronounced dead.

Bail for Petrillo was set at $35,000.

The crash remains under investigation. Authorities asked anyone with information to call Edison police Detective Michael Felcetto at 732-248-7400 or Detective Erik Larsen of the Middlesex County Prosecutor's Office at 732-745-3263.
