The driver of the bus, a Trenton man, has been charged with careless driving.

EAST WINDSOR -- A township woman struck by a bus while on foot in front of the East Windsor Senior Center earlier this month died at a hospital the next day, East Windsor police said.

The driver of the bus has been charged with careless driving.

Mary J. Wall, 87, of East Windsor died at Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital in New Brunswick Oct. 13. She was hit by the bus the day before and initially taken to Robert Johnson's Hamilton campus.

Police said in a statement Monday that the bus - operated by Gilberto Santiago, 72, of Trenton - was parked in front of the senior center on Lanning Boulevard and it lurched forward as he tried to put it into gear.

Wall, who was using a walker, was on the passenger side of the bus, which hit her walker, knocking her to the ground. She complained of head and back pain and was taken to the hospital by ambulance.

Santiago was not injured in the 12:30 p.m. incident. East Windsor police charged him with careless driving.

Wall's obituary described her as retired from Davlyn Industrial - in Monroe Township - where she worked for 28 years, until 2002.

She was a member of St. Anthony of Padua Roman Catholic Church in Hightstown and is survived by three children and seven grandchildren.

The incident remains under investigation by the township police's Traffic Safety Unit and the Mercer County Prosecutor's Office Serious Collision Response Team, police said.
