The southbound lanes are closed at Sands Hill Rd. in South Brunswick
SOUTH BRUNSWICK -- A tractor trailer hauling a boat spilled 100 gallons of diesel onto Route 1 this morning after it jackknifed, closing the road and leading to hours of traffic jams, South Brunswick police said.
The 1987 Kenworth tractor trailer was headed south at about 7:40 a.m. when it approached slowing traffic just past Sands Hill Road, according to police. The 49-yea-old driver, Peter Stamm of Southington, Conn. applied his brakes and the weight of the boat forced the tractor to tip.
The truck then sideswiped a 2008 Volvo in the left lane driven by Christine Foy, 27, of Hoboken.
Foy's vehicle hit a 2013 Nissan being driven by Chirayu Patel, 32, of Edison.
The crash caused a rupture in the tractor's diesel tank.
No one was hurt but the crash closed the southbound lanes for nearly two hours and led to major backups in the area.
One southbound lane re-opened at 9:30, police said. Cleanup crews are expected to be on the scene until about noon.
