EDISON -- In its continuing initiative to engage the community, the township's police department will be out during Halloween armed with hundreds of goodie bags to hand out to "well-behaved, young trick-or-treaters," according to a statement from the township.

"Our hope is for kids to have a safe, fun and positive encounter with our officers," said community resource Officer Melissa Michalak in the statement.

The officers will be on patrol from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. with their radio cars packed with goody bags.

Also on Sunday, officers will be sponsoring a "Trunk-or-Treat" in the Menlo Park Mall's parking lot at the Monroe Avenue grade school community event. From 1 p.m. to 4 p.m., officers will be giving away candy gift bags and snacks from the trunks of their patrol cars during the event.

Edison Police Officer Keith Hahn, who also serves as the chair of the township's Democratic Organization, said in a statement, "The teachers, custodians, librarians, secretaries, public works, cops and fireman are why Edison is one of the best places to live and raise a young family."

Lois Tarr, a retired teacher who organized Trunk or Treat event, added in the statement: "It was a pleasure bringing the public and educational employee unions together to create a safe and fun filled Halloween experience for the children of Edison."
