Car strikes 2 people crossing highway in Old Bridge

Two people were struck by a vehicle in Old Bridge on Wednesday.

OLD BRIDGE -- A vehicle struck two people on Wednesday as they were attempting to cross Route 9 near Fairway Lane, police said.

At around 3 p.m., an 81-year-old man driving on Fairway Lane made a right turn onto Route 9 when he struck a 53-year-old woman and a 54-year-old man crossing the highway, authorities said. The two pedestrians were from Old Bridge, according to reports.

The two were taken to Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital in New Brunswick. Police did not know the extent of their injuries but said they were listed in stable condition.

There are no pending charges against the driver at this time, police said. Reports said the man was from Florida.

Officials noted that at the spot where the two pedestrians were struck does not have a crosswalk and has a no-crossing sign displayed on the Route 9 grass median.

The incident remains under investigation.
