The township's police department will be cracking down on impaired drivers starting this weekend.

EDISON -- Beginning this weekend, township police will be ramping up patrols, looking for drivers impaired by drugs and alcohol as part of the state's annual "Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over" initiative.

"Our officers are routinely vigilant about enforcing motor vehicle and traffic safety laws," said township police Chief Thomas Bryan in a statement. "This becomes more imperative throughout the holiday season with parties, celebrations and family functions (at) an almost daily occurrence."

Edison has received a $5,000 grant from the New Jersey Division of Highway Traffic Safety to participate in the campaign, according to the township.

Bryan said there will be additional police on patrol with sobriety checkpoints set up to catch those driving under the influence.

There were 800 deaths last year from alcohol-related accidents on highways and roads throughout the state, the statement said, citing state Division of Highway Traffic Safety statistics.
