Since the scheme was uncovered, 27 physicians and 12 others have pleaded guilty to charges in the wide-reaching case
NEWARK -- A doctor from South Brunswick was indicted Tuesday on charges he accepted bribes from a now-closed clinical lab in Morris County in exchange for referrals, authorities said.
Ahmed E. Soury, 44, is the latest in a long line of physicians and employees of the Biodiagnostic Laboratory Services of Parsippany accused of taking part in the massive scheme, authorities said.
Soury took $65,000 in payouts from the lab in exchange for test referrals, the U.S. Attorney for New Jersey said in a news release.
His referrals, which he authorities say he provided between, 2011 and 2013, generated about $650,000 in business for the lab, authorities said.
El Soury, who practices internal medicine in Staten Island, N.Y., is charged multiple counts of wire fraud as well as violating the anti-kickback statute.
The defunct Parsippany lab company lavished payments on physicians in New York and New Jersey in return for their patients' blood tests, a prize that netted the company more than $100 million in revenue, prosecutors said.
Since the scheme was uncovered in 2013, 27 physicians and 12 others, including Biodiagnostic employees, have pleaded guilty to charges in the wide-reaching case.
U.S. Attorney for New Jersey Paul J. Fishman said he believes the Biodiagnostic affair has the largest number of medical professionals ever prosecuted in a bribery case.
