You don't need to have ever swung a golf club to enjoy New Jersey's first Topgolf location.
EDISON -- The three-level, 65-000 square foot Topgolf entertainment venue opening later this month in Edison isn't your typical driving range.
The high-tech, luxury take on golf entertainment includes a restaurant with a loaded menu, rooftop terrace, craft beer, live music, games and, of course, golf.
"You don't need to know or be into golf to have a good time," said company spokesman Morgan Wallace.
When the Edison venue opens Dec. 23, it'll be the first New Jersey location for the the Dallas, Texas-based sports entertainment company. Another Topgolf location is slated to open in Mount Laurel late next year.
NJ Advance Media got a sneak preview of the new facility this week before it opens. Here are 9 things to know about the new entertainment venue:
1. Games
The venue features 102 hitting bays stacked on three levels. Colorful targets -- which are also used for light shows -- reach up to 215 yards away in the range. Guests can choose a variety of target games.
2. Microchip golf balls
Every golf ball is equipped with a microchip that gauges the distance after being struck. The distance is then relayed to each bay's computer screen.
3. Climate-controlled hitting bays
All of the bays are climate controlled by heated ceiling vents, allowing guests to golf year-round -- even when it snows (the targets are also heated). Each bay also has a television and table to enjoy your meal. Customers are also welcome to flip through any channel they desire.
4. Food, drink and Mushi
The kitchen has a staff of 75 employees who cook up an original menu made from scratch daily.
Seve Delgado, national director of culinary operations, said the menu is "home comfort food with a little twist."
Some of the dishes include injectable doughnut holes, Sunrise Burger, chicken and waffles, pulled pork, char-grilled steak, and Mushi -- one of the venue's specials, which is a combination of Mexican food made into a sushi-like roll.
5. Multiple bars and lounge areas
There's a rooftop terrace looking over the city with tables, fire pits, and a bar. The terrace will feature live entertainment and music.
6. Bring the kids
On the bottom level, there are HD televisions, Xbox, pool tables, shuffleboard and other games for the kids and the adults to play.
7. Instruction integrated with Topgolf app
Lessons will be offered to those looking to improve their game. And, Topgolf's app allows users to document their swing and track their progress.
8. Bring your clubs, or don't
You can bring your own clubs, but if you don't have any, Topgolf supplies each bay with clubs for men and women and for right-and left-handed players.
9. Schedule that company event
Companies can rent space for corporate events, holiday parties or any other gathering. The venue has 3,000-square feet of private meeting space.
Bays are rented by the hour and allow one to six players. Hourly rates are $20 an hour from opening to noon, $30 an hour from noon to 5 p.m., and $40 an hour from 5 p.m. to closing. So, if you have six people, that comes out to about $4, $5, or $7 an hour per person.
The venue is located at 1013 Route 1, in Edison. For more information, visit www.topgolf.com.
