SOUTH BRUNSWICK -- A Franklin Park man was arrested Tuesday on charges he was driving a backhoe "while drinking beer and swerving all over the road," police said in a statement.
William Campbell, 56, was driving the backhoe at around 3:45 p.m. west on New Road near Route 1 when an officer saw him "drift back and forth in the lane and onto the shoulder of the road," the statement said.
Campbell appeared "slouched over the wheel of the backhoe while he was driving," police said.
The officer pulled the backhoe over near the Kendall Park Fire Department headquarters and smelled alcohol on Campbell's breath, police said. A bottle of Jack Daniels and a Vodka bottle were found, police said.
Campbell admitted he did not have a valid driver's license, police said. He was charged with driving while intoxicated and was issued several motor vehicle summonses, including careless driving, failing to maintain a lane, and having an open alcohol container.
Additionally, he was charged with driving while suspended, which resulted from seven prior DWI convictions dating back to 1980, police said.
He was taken to police headquarters and processed. He was later released pending his first court appearance in January.
