A Perth Amboy man has been charged in connection with a hit-and-run recently.
PERTH AMBOY -- A city man has been arrested and charged in connection with fleeing after hitting an 83-year-old man with his car last week.
Edwin Viera, 53, was charged with leaving the scene of the accident and obstruction after hitting the 83-year-old man, of Perth Amboy, who officials say remains hospitalized in critical condition, according to a statement from the Middlesex County Prosecutor's Office.
Viera, according to officials, was parked on Lawrie Street on Dec. 16 when he "backed his 1998 Honda Civic into the Penn Street intersection and struck the victim, who was crossing Penn Street at 9:45 p.m.," the statement said. He then fled the scene in his car.
Viera surrendered to police on Thursday. His bail has been set at $10,000.
The 83-year-old man, who was not identified, is being treated at Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital in New Brunswick.
The case remains under investigation by city police Det. Jessica DeJesus and Det. Donald Heck, of the Middlesex County Prosecutor's Office.
